Principles for the Use of Pressure Vessel Heads

1. Geometric Aspects: Under the same volume, a hemispherical head has the smallest surface area, while the surface area of an elliptical head is essentially the same as that of a dished head.

2. Mechanical Aspects: Under the same diameter, wall thickness, and working pressure conditions, a hemispherical head experiences the lowest stress. The biaxial membrane stresses are equal and uniformly distributed along the meridian. If connected to a cylinder of the same wall thickness, the high stress near the junction is parallel to the membrane stress, with no significant difference observed.

3. Manufacturing and Material Consumption: Various types of heads are typically manufactured by punching, stamping, rolling, or explosive forming. Hemispherical and elliptical heads are generally produced by stamping, while large hemispherical heads may be fabricated by first stamping into spherical segments and then assembling and welding them. Dished heads are usually formed by punching, stamping, or explosive forming, with the flanged portions made by rolling or hammering.
